If you’re wondering whether or not you can podcast using just a smartphone, the short answer is yes. However, just because it’s possible, does that mean you should do it? Read on as we explore!

How to Start Podcasting: A Simple Process

One of the great things about podcasting is that it’s easy to get started. The opportunity to reach a potential worldwide audience of millions is at the fingertips of anyone with a smartphone and an internet connection. It can cost little or nothing at all!

As we mentioned, yes you absolutely can start podcasting with a smartphone. Every smartphone has a built-in microphone, so all you need is a simple recording app. You can even go with something podcast-specific such as Anchor or Spreaker which let you create episodes and upload right from your phone. It really couldn’t be easier!

Easier Isn’t Necessarily Better

Just because you can podcast from your smartphone, does it mean you should? One of the biggest reasons not to use a smartphone is simply because of quality. While some smartphones can have surprisingly good recording quality, it’s no match for a proper microphone. Using a smartphone, no matter how good, still will have a low-quality character to it. This can reflect poorly on your brand.

Another interesting thing to note is from data collected over at TheAudacityPodcast.com. It seems that the people most likely to keep their podcast active are those who were willing to invest time and/or money into their endeavor. Podcast hosting services offering free tiers seemed to show a higher number of inactive podcasts and podcasts with very few episodes, likely indicating a podcaster launched but gave up after just a few episodes, also known as “podfade.”

This could be for a number of reasons. The low or no-cost option of using a smartphone instead of buying some proper equipment is excellent for a curious podcaster to get their feet wet and see if it’s something they’d like to continue. Perhaps this is one of the reasons for the high number of inactive podcasts, some people tried it out and simply weren’t interested in continuing. It definitely makes sense in these cases to give it a try before investing any money.

This is perfectly fine for independent or hobbyist podcasters, but for businesses or professionals who have a reputation to uphold, we highly recommend launching a podcast with your best foot forward! Also if you’re not willing to make a proper investment into podcasting, then it’s a good time to give some serious thought into whether it’s worth doing at all. As the saying goes, “anything worth doing is worth doing right”, and “right” doesn’t have to be expensive!

Podcasting the Right Way and Protecting Your Brand

Creating a quality podcast does not have to be expensive. A decent sounding USB microphone can be had for about $100 these days, and with the right setup you can get near studio-quality audio from nearly anywhere.

Compare this to podcasting with a smartphone, which, unless you’re using an external microphone attachment, just doesn’t sound good. Listeners will notice that your podcast just doesn’t sound right. The last thing you want is a listener tuning in once, never coming back, and leaving with a poor impression of your brand.

It’s understandable to be a little nervous about beginning podcasting and whether you should invest a few dollars on a microphone or recording setup and launch services. Our best recommendation is to do lots of research, plan your content, and be certain that you’re able to commit to podcasting and give it the time and attention it requires.

Tips for Recording Your Podcast with a Smartphone

So you’ve read this article and you’d still like to record your podcast using a smartphone? Here are some tips to get the absolute best sound possible:

  • Record in a quiet, echo-free area, or at least the best you can find.
  • Never record in a car or other noisy environment.
  • Don’t speak too close to the phone and not too far away either.
  • If you want to make recording with your smartphone a regular thing, invest in a detachable mobile microphone. This will bring the quality way up, and is essentially like recording with a real microphone – the smartphone is no longer an issue! Just be sure before spending any money that you’re buying the right product for your situation (ie; would you rather buy a desktop microphone or a portable attachment for your phone?)
